Salinas Community Addresses Prostitution and Human Trafficking Concerns

Residents of East Salinas have raised concerns over the increasing visibility of prostitution and human trafficking in their neighborhoods. In response, the Salinas City Council has approved a $620,000 initiative aimed at enhancing street lighting in East Salinas to deter such activities. Community Development Director Lisa Brinton emphasized that while this measure is a deterrent, it is a step toward making the neighborhood feel more safe.

Community members have actively participated in protests and council meetings to highlight the issue and advocate for solutions. Some residents have expressed concerns about the safety of children in the area, noting the frequent presence of sex workers near schools and residential zones. The city has also considered relocating food trucks along Kern Street, as some believe their presence may inadvertently contribute to the problem.

While increased police patrols have been implemented, residents feel that the lack of strict penalties allows the issue to persist. The city acknowledges that addressing prostitution and human trafficking requires a multifaceted approach, including community engagement, infrastructure improvements, and law enforcement efforts.
